39 Increased security of supply is a major theme in the European Energy Union, proposed by the EU Commission in February, and now discussed by EU leaders and institutions. The three Baltic States are among the EU member states that are heavily dependant on imported natural gas. Yet these countries also have untapped resources of biomass for energy. This transition from fossil energy to bioenergy was the theme of the recent Nordic Baltic Bioenergy Conference held in Riga, Latvia. 40 Power became a major issue in 2011 for Japan. Less than 10 percent of its total primary energy comes from domestic sources. An increased focus on renewables including feed-in tariffs has prompted biomass investment. But unlike Dixie, this plant produces “Zilkha Black” pellets. 8 Recently acclaimed as “a model of industrial sustainability”, Laverstoke Mill is a flagship distillery and brand home for Bombay Sapphire gin. A biomass boiler, fuelled by woodchips and spent botanicals, supplies all the process heat which is then recovered for space heating. 48 ISH 2015 lived up to and consolidated its reputation as the world’s largest trade show for sanitation, heating and air-conditioning. Even with meticulous planning focusing on the energy side, two full days still provided only a glimpse of what’s coming next in biomass heating appliances. 19 Not onl y does Anhui Guozhen Biomas CHP supply district heating to businesses by pipeline delivery, it also outsources a hot water truck service to cater for “off-pipe” clients. 12 Södra Cell Värö, a major pulp mill sited north of Varberg on the Swedish west coast is now gearing up to increase capacity significantly. Not only is Södra Cell Värö one of Sweden’s largest integrated forest product companies, it is also a major green energy producer. 33 Closure on the European “ILUC file”, a compromise with European Council on indirect land use change (ILUC). The endorsed legislative draft sets a 7 percent cap on first generation biofuels and a non-binding 0.5 percent target for advanced biofuels.
