AAK - Sustainability Report 2014/2015

Air Rising average temperatures, more extreme weather and changes in rainfall patterns are all symptoms of the climate change we are experiencing. Today, legislation and markets aim to mitigate these changes by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions believed to be the driver of global climate change. AAK is playing its part.   In 2014, AAK generated 247,000 MT of carbon dioxide at its production plants, which is 1.4 percent less than in 2013. 39 percent of direct carbon dioxide emissions stemmed from renewable resources. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel per MT processed decreased 11 percent compared to 2013.   The ozone layer protects life on earth by filtering out some of the sun’s harmful UV radiation. For that reason, any thinning 34 of the ozone layer is hazardous. AAK works actively toward eliminating all equipment that uses ozone-depleting substances (ODS), which are generally used for cooling. Due to new acquisitions, a significant rise was experienced in 2013, from 27 kg to 3,127 kg of ODS. In 2014 ODS decreased with 26 percent to 2,325 kg.   Due to the Group’s use of fuels, its production plants emit 246 MT NOx (nitrogen oxide) and 177 MT SOx (sulphur oxide). 232 MT VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are also emitted from plants that run extraction and solvent fractionation processes.
