Water risk assessment
AAK has started a journey to adapt our production to
potential risks from climate change. The first step in this
journey is a risk assessment of our production portfolio.
AAK has chosen to focus on water risk first because
of an increased number of extreme weather events
reported globally linked to water as well as the potentially
destructive power of water.
The World Resources Institute has made available
the Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas (Aqueduct). It is a
comprehensive and publicly available global database
and interactive mapping tool that provides information
on water-related risks worldwide. Twelve global indicators
are being used to assess the water related risks
for specific geographic locations and to give an overall
water risk score between 1 and 5 (1 being the lowest
possible risk and 5 being extremely high risk).
AAK has used the Aqueduct tool to create a global
water risk map of all our production sites. None of our
sites is exposed to extremely high or high risk. The
highest scoring production sites in AAK’s portfolio score
medium to high risk.
A global meeting was held to introduce this tool to
the production sites. Each site has received a detailed
analysis of their overall score in order to be able to
develop a water risk mitigation plan relevant to their
specific situation in 2019.
